To my Beautiful Mama

To My Beautiful Mama,

Today you might have woke up and noticed that your skin has aged, your body isn’t 25 and your joints are a little tighter. You might have looked at yourself and wondered when you’ll have to dye your hair again to cover the grey. You might have questioned if you should do more to keep yourself up. You might have critiqued your weight. And you might have even Mocked your beauty with a turn of shame walking away from the mirror.

and maybe you’ll do it again tomorrow, and maybe again next week and again next month.

But, My beautiful mama,

Today, I woke up & I saw YOU. My mama.

The one who’s body created life 4 times. Who’s wrinkles define wisdom and dedication to a 52 year journey. I saw strength reach your joints in finding your way to my arms for a hug. I saw your eyes and they told stories of faith.

I did see you. But i didn’t see imperfection and I didn’t see who stared you back in the mirror with lies,

but i felt your skin, and it felt like home. I heard your laugh and it sounded like childhood. I saw your smile and it brought me pure joy. I saw you pray in silence with your eyes open.

I saw you and i’ll see you again tomorrow and again next week and again next month, because if you’d ask me to mirror your beauty, i would shine a spotlight on your heart.

If you could see yourself through my eyes, you would find a beauty standard you’ve never met.

The kind that isn’t measured but felt.

Kamie Robinson Muirhead,

you are perfect because you are mine.
